Police fear Qld road toll will hit 200

Posted August 7, 2008 15:06:00

Police fear this year's Queensland's road toll could reach 200 over the weekend.

One hundred and ninety seven people have died on the state's roads so far this year, with 33 deaths over the past four weeks.

Authorities are concerned about the trend and are reminding drivers not to speed, not to drink and drive, and to wear their seatbelts.

Police Minister Judy Spence says there will be several traffic operations conducted throughout the state over the weekend.

"We've got a few rodeos going throughout Queensland. We've got races in Cairns, we've got the Ekka here in Brisbane," she said.

"So there are a number of events happening in Queensland this weekend and police have operations in place to target those events and particularly road users in those events."
