High fuel prices keeping some farmers away from Ekka

Posted August 7, 2008 16:44:00

High petrol prices are forcing some farmers to stay away from Brisbane's royal show.

Petrol prices in several southern Queensland and northern New South Wales centres have reached 175 cents per litre in recent months.

Agricultural councillor at the Ekka, Greg Dalton, says farmers are helping each other out.

"Fuel prices are certainly having an impact," he said.

"The exhibitors that have come down with their produce continue to come, others are giving produce to somebody who is coming to Brisbane saying will you take my bananas down on your truck, I'm having difficulties with the fuel bill."
