An air-conditioning problem forced the cancellation of a Qantas flight in Melbourne this morning.

The 737 was about to leave for Canberra when noises were heard coming from an air-conditioning unit.

The plane was taken back to the terminal.

Passenger Helen Druett says she had already faced a delay when the flight was cancelled.

"I was supposed to be on a 10.50am plane, which was cancelled," she said.

"So then I was on the 11.35am plane, which I got onto, and we must have sat out on the tarmac for about 45 [to] 50 minutes.

"And then we had to disembark, and wait for another half an hour, and get on again."

Another passenger, Matthew Smith, says the plane had begun to taxi onto the runway before it was turned around.

"Where the engineers were then having a look at what may have been a problem within the air-conditioning," he said.

"They eventually - not wanting to take any chances - decided to disembark all passengers, who would have to wait for an alternative flight, while they continued looking at the fault if there was one."
