NSW job figues 'a real worry'

Posted August 8, 2008 09:37:00

The New South Wales Government has rejected Opposition criticism that it is not doing enough to generate jobs.

Job figures released yesterday show 17,600 jobs were lost from New South Wales last month, the worst performance of all the states and territories.

The Opposition's treasury spokesman, Greg Pearce, says the figures highlight the incompetence of the State Government.

"The international economic conditions are really quite troubling and the fact that this Government, that the Iemma Government, is doing nothing to encourage growth of our economy and growth of business in NSW is a real worry," he said.

But Regional Development Minister Tony Kelly says the Government has programs in place to generate employment.

"This gives a lie to his comment because for a small investment of $1.5 million to support the industry capability network it has ensured that we have picked up some 2,440 jobs in the state and almost $205 millionin business has been generated here," he said.
