The Member for Leichhardt says construction of a $150 million road upgrade in Cairns will start as soon as possible.
A total of $5 million will be spent to conduct a feasibility for the southern corridor of the Bruce Highway.
Jim Turnour says he is pleased the project is moving ahead of schedule because planning was initially due to start next year.
He says it will make an important difference to drivers and those who live in the area.
"There are schools on either side of the Bruce Highway on this section of road, we get a lot of traffic crossing it," he said.
"It's one of the worst areas for accidents in the southern access to Cairns. This is about fixing up that area of the road to obviously ease traffic congestion but also to make the area safer."
