Police back double demerits for holidays

Posted August 8, 2008 14:09:00

Police in Gippsland have backed calls to introduce double demerits over long weekends and holidays.

Drivers in other states including New South Wales and Western Australia are given double the demerits points if they are caught breaking road rules over the holiday period.

Superintendent Geoff Newby says with a high number of tourist traffic in Gippsland over the holidays the move would encourage drivers to do the right thing.

He says its just one of the ways police are working to cut the road toll in Gippsland.

"We are working fairly hard to try and minimise the road toll, we would love for it to be zero but we cannot control everyone's driving habits its not only the road toll its the actual collisions," he said.

"We would like them to come down too and there is a frustration when all the effort goes in we are not seeing a decline."
