The State Opposition says it will repeal Western Australia's prostitution laws if it wins the upcoming election.

Earlier this year the state parliament passed new laws legalising prostitution and giving local councils the power to decide where brothels could operate.

The Opposition leader Colin Barnett says similar laws in the eastern states have led to a proliferation of brothels.

Mr Barnett says local councils are powerless to stop brothels opening in suburban areas.
