Residents rally against desal plant

Posted August 11, 2008 08:47:00

A group residents from Agnes Water and the Town of 1770, south of Gladstone, say they will continue to protest against the the Gladstone Regional Council's plan to build a desalination plant.

Over the weekend, locals, their children and dogs walked through Agnes Water's main shopping area down onto the beach carrying placards and chanting "no desal".

A picnic near the proposed site was held yesterday.

One organiser, Michelle Millar, says they want a freeze put on the project's State Government funding to allow time for an alternative project to be considered.

"There are a lot of people who love this area and are very, very concerned about the way the area is heading," she said.

"We just want to be able to have an input as to how the area progresses to ensure that our industry, our one and only industry, which is tourism, is protected and the environment is protected."
