Athletes off to strong Olympics start

Posted August 11, 2008 10:20:00

One of the Goulburn Murray region's best Olympic medal hopes had a strong start to her Beijing campaign.

Albury's Lauren Jackson captained Australia's women's basketball to a win over Belarus on Saturday.

Other local athletes have also seen their campaigns off to good starts.

Goorambat's Matt Gray qualified for the next round in the men's individual archery, while Mansfield cyclist Simon Gerrans finished in 37th spot in the road race.

Shepparton shooter Bruce Quick marched in the opening ceremony on Friday and says despite the criticism, he liked the Australian uniform.

"It was silver and blue and it was different, we can't always have akubra hats and Driza-Bones and look it was a bit different, but we stood out and I was proud to wear it," he said.
