A 22-year-old man has been charged for assault and threatening to fire-bomb a home in western Sydney.

Police say they were called to a Merino Way home at Airds after a domestic incident about 5:50pm (AEST).

Officers say they confronted the man as he was walking towards the home carrying a tomahawk, a petrol can and a lighter.

Police say they negotiated with the man and he put the weapons on the ground, but he charged at them.

The man was taken to Campbelltown Police Station, where he was charged.

He will appear at Campbelltown Local Court today.
