Green group lobbies against coal port plan

Posted August 11, 2008 10:33:00

The Capricorn Conservation Council (CCC) says it will be writing to Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett about a proposed coal port at Shoalwater Bay in central Queensland.

The project has been submitted to the Government to be cleared under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, which provides a legal framework to protect matters of national environmental significance.

CCC president Ian Herbert is urging locals to write to the Minister as well.

"It's important that people of central Queensland send a strong message to Peter Garrett, the federal Environment Minister, that putting a coal port in Byfield is not an acceptable project to approve," he said.
