Clare group closer to finding airstrip site

Posted August 11, 2008 11:38:00

A Clare group says it is one step closer to developing a new airstrip in the area after a seven year search for suitable locations.

The group says it has found two suitable locations and will soon survey the land and get a local architect to draw up a concept plan.

The group's leader, Adrian Smith, says the idea still needs council support, but public meetings will be held to gauge support.

Mr Smith says a landowner turned the group away from the first preference for a site, but there are other options.

"We've now found a strip 14 kilometres north of Clare, right on the Spalding to Clare main road," he said.

"It seems to have everything in its favour and we've also got another potential strip at Blyth. The people over there are a bit keen for a development as well, so we've gone from nothing to now having to probably make a decision between two."
