Rudd in Singapore to discuss defence, trade

Posted August 12, 2008 08:00:00

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will focus on defence, national security and trade when he meets political and business leaders in Singapore today.

As in Korea, the Prime Minister's first duty in Singapore will be to lay a wreath in remembrance of fallen Australian soldiers buried at Singapore's Kranji war cemetery.

But the rest of his day is dedicated mainly to pursuing closer security, defence and economic ties with Singapore.

He will again lobby for support for his idea for an Asia-Pacific community, warning that the alternative could be a splintering of the region, particularly between China and the United States.

While support for the idea has been muted, Mr Rudd says he has encountered no road blocks so far.
