Teachers stop work over staffing worries

Posted August 12, 2008 11:13:00

In an ongoing industrial dispute over school staffing arrangements, teachers at two schools in south-east New South Wales will take strike action today.

Teachers at the Narooma High School will attend a stop-work meeting today to back action by teachers at Cooma's Monaro High who are striking this afternoon.

The action is part of a state-wide campaign of rolling strikes over Education Department moves to do away with the teacher transfer system and instead leave recruitment to school principals.

The Government says the move is designed to allow schools the opportunity to attract specialist teachers such as for maths and science.

But the teachers' federation says schools such as Monaro High will find it difficult to attract teachers because of the area's harsh winter climate.

The Government says it is willing to talk to the teachers, but has made it clear that it has no intention to abandon the new system.
