Citrus growers would welcome water boost

Posted August 12, 2008 14:02:00

Riverland citrus industry development officer Kim Thiel says although recent rain in the Riverland has been welcomed by growers, increased water allocations would have a greater impact on the industry.

About five millimetres of rain was recorded at most places in the region at the weekend and light rains are expected to continue until the end of the week.

Mr Thiel says this year's navel harvest estimates were down partly because of the low water allocations.

Estimates for the valencia harvest will be determined by the board at the end of the month.

Mr Thiel says he is hopeful the current 2 per cent allocations will soon be increased.

"Certainly the information that's been put up by the Minister so far certainly does show that over time, we're all very hopeful that allocations will increase," he said.

"However, it's really got nothing to do with rainfall here locally, it's all rainfall in the catchment, and that's pretty much where it's at."
