Union rejects power privatisation statement

Posted August 13, 2008 09:02:00

The president of the Barrier Industrial Council says the union movement rejects the findings of the New South Wales Government's rural community impact statement on the privatisation of electricity.

The statement found there will be no detrimental impacts for rural and regional communities under the Government's plans to sell off the retail sector of the electricity industry, nor is there evidence that employment in the sector would decline.

Danny O'Connor says he feels the consultants who prepared the statement made the situation seem favourable, and there is no guarantee jobs will not be lost if the political climate changes.

"If the Liberal Party get into power who's to say that they don't all of a sudden shed jobs and give it to the private enterprise," he said.

"Nothing is for certain in life, but one thing is, that is private industry want to make profits, the first thing they do is raise prices and shed jobs."
