The Tasmanian Premier, David Bartlett, has released details of a $32 million literacy initiative for primary schools.

26 schools have been chosen to receive extra resources over the next four years.

Mr Bartlett made the announcement at New Norfolk's Fairview primary school this morning. He told a grade 5-6 class, the literacy initiative will close the gap between high and low achievers.

The funds will enable the chosen schools to employ extra teachers to work one on one with students most in need and will pay for more professional development for staff.

Mr Bartlett says he expects to see improved literacy results within two years.
