Council election nomination deadline looms

Posted August 13, 2008 13:00:00

Candidates who want to run in the approaching local government elections only have until today to nominate themselves.

A bumper field of six, including incumbent Eddie Loftus, are making a tilt for mayor of Greater Taree City Council.

Meanwhile, 17 people are standing for councillor positions.

Fourty-three candidates are competing for spots on Great Lakes Council, while only 11 people have so far put up their hands in Gloucester Shire Council.

Fifteen people, including current Mayor Betty Green, are standing for positions on Kempsey Shire Council.

There will not be an election in Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, which has been run by administrator Dick Persson since the council was sacked in February.

Meanwhile, five people, including incumbent Keith Rhoades and Greens' activist Mark Graham, are standing for Coffs Harbour mayor, while 38 people are on the ballot for council so far.

A total of 29 people have put their hand up for spots on Bellingen Shire Council.

The race for mayor is between veteran councillor Gordon Braithwaite, Green-turned-independent Jillian Cranney and incumbent Mark Troy.

So far, 15 people are standing for Clarence Valley Council, while only 10 people are standing for Nambucca Shire Council.
