Environment monitor accepts response to Port Phillip breach

The independent environmental monitor for the channel deepening project has accepted the Port of Melbourne's response to a breach of conditions last month.

The Port failed to clean up enough of a dredged area at the entrance to Port Phillip within the specified time frame.

An internal investigation by the Port found computer error was to blame and says more checks and training have been introduced so that it does not happen again.

Environmental monitor Mick Bourke has accepted the Port's explanation and amendments.

"I think the community should be confident that the response by the Port of Melbourne Corporation and our environmental overview of the project is ensuring that the project is being conducted in accordance with the rule book," he said.
