Yetman fight pays off with phone tower

Posted August 14, 2008 14:36:00

A new mobile telephone tower will be officially commissioned at Yetman today.

It will mark the end of a long fight by the local community, which was originally told by Telstra it could not get mobile coverage because it was not financially viable.

It finally won its tower after an agreement with emergency services it would use the tower to help boost its own communications.

Telstra regional manager Richard Bourne says there is little doubt the tower was community driven.

"The local community have really driven this themselves and engaging with us and the New South Wales Government to make this investment a reality," he said.

"From Telstra's perspective we have to look if we're going to get a return on our investment, but are always happy to work with local communities where we can."
