Agreement aims to curb Bendigo binge drinking

Posted August 15, 2008 10:41:00

About 25 liquor licensees in Bendigo have signed an agreement to try to reduce binge drinking in the city.

The existing Bendigo Liquor Accord was created last year to complement the 2:00am AEST lockout at CBD venues.

Police have invited other licensees across the city to join the agreement, and the new group signed up voluntarily yesterday.

Inspector Paul Newman says police are hope the remaining group of about 20 will also jump on board soon.

"It's just responsible service of alcohol in the main, having all participants that are part of their business, functioning to be trained in the responsible serving of alcohol issues," he said.

"There are a huge range of issues and none of them too onerous or too hard to comply with, but all commonsense."
