Australia's maritime patrol aircraft, the P3-C Orions, will be upgraded.

Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon says $68 million will be spent improving the planes' surveillance and communication systems.

The Minister has visited Edinburgh air force base in Adelaide, where 19 Orions are based.

"This money will upgrade a number of things on the P-3s. It upgrades their communications and, importantly, upgrades their video links providing real-time surveillance of what's happening in theatre," he said.
