Federal Opposition frontbencher Greg Hunt says site works for possible construction of a weir on the Murray at Wellington in South Australia could breach the law.

Australia is a party to the Ramsar agreement which lists the Coorong and lower lakes at the Murray mouth as wetlands of international importance.

Mr Hunt says he has formally notified the Federal Government about site works that have started.

"I've written to Peter Garrett to say this is a breach potentially of the federal environment law," he said.

"You have a South Australian minister who is preparing to close off the Ramsar site, game over, and that is a serious breach of a federal law.

"Stop desist and abide by the law."
