An English-born nature-lover with a passion for the tasmanian devil is the 2008 Tasmanian of the Year.

Bruce Englefield has donated 28 hectares of east coast land to try to establish a viable disease-free devil population.

To raise money, he and a team of supporters also ran the London Marathon.

At the awards ceremony at Government House in Hobart tonight, Mr Englefield's efforts were described as inspirational.

Mr Englefield hopes to raise $130,000 to create a "devil island" facility to help establish an insurance population of the animals.
