Three servicemen from the conflict remain missing presumed dead.

The team has pinpointed the location where they think Private David Fisher of the Special Air Services Regiment died in 1969 after falling from a helicopter.

Minister for Defence Science Warren Snowdon has welcomed the news.

"I am very proud of the Australian Army's commitment to this investigation," Mr Snowdon said in a Defence press release.

"Private Fisher was a brave soldier who lost his life in service of his country, and it is our duty to make every effort to locate and appropriately honour him."

A full archaeological dig will be conducted at the site this week after an initial survey discovered some human remains.

The Defence team has also begun preliminary investigations on the the remaining two missing Australian servicemen.
