Fine food awards cook up a storm

Posted August 17, 2008 12:00:00

A record number of products have been entered in this year's Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards.

Organisers say the 800 cakes, smallgoods, breads and roast coffee samples is up 50 per cent on the previous best.

Spokesman Philip Le Grove says local producers have traditionally fared well in the honey, preserves and cheese categories, but the large number of interstate entrants have also submitted some top quality products.

He says the growing interest in the awards is testament to their increasing stature.

"Well I think to the consumer who is in the supermarket or in a delicatessen shopping for that product, and they see that the product has achieved a gold medal at the Royal Hobart Fine Food Awards, then it's an indication that it's a top product, and it it's a reason to purchase," Mr Le Grove said.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony tonight.
