China makes history with women's quadruple sculls gold

Posted August 17, 2008 19:07:00

China has won its first ever Olympic rowing gold medal by upsetting world champions Britain in the women's quadruple sculls at the Beijing Games.

The Chinese quartet of Tang Bin, Jin Ziwei, Xi Aihua and Zhang Yangyang rowed the final 500 metres almost three seconds quicker than the Brits to snatch the victory in a time of 6:16.06.

The Australian women's team of Amber Bradley, Kerry Hore, Amy Ives and Zoe Uphill finished sixth.

Britain's reigning triple world champions were hoping to become the first British women to win an Olympic rowing gold and seemingly had the race in the bag with 500m left.

They led by 1.5sec but could not match China's storming finish.

Germany, who had won every previous Olympic edition of this event (including once as East Germany), took the bronze.
