Poland win men's quadruple sculls gold

Posted August 17, 2008 19:27:00

Triple world champion Poland has won the men's quadruple sculls gold at the Beijing Olympic rowing competition.

Konrad Wasielewski, Marek Kolbowicz, Michal Jelinski and Adam Korol took the lead from the start and held off Italy, for whom Rossano Galtarossa and Simone Ranieri had been champions in Sydney eight years ago, to claim the title.

France finished strongly to pip Australia for the bronze medal by just 0.34sec.

Germany faded to sixth and last, ensuring for the first time since the country's unification that they will come away from an Olympic rowing competition without a gold medal.
