US wins women's eights rowing gold

Posted August 17, 2008 19:42:00

The United States has won the women's eights gold medal at the Beijing Olympic rowing competition.

The double world champions gained revenge on Romania after finishing second in Athens four years ago.

The Netherlands finished strongly to take the silver medal away from Romania, who had to settle for the bronze.

Romanian Georgeta Andrunache, who with Viorica Susanu won the women's pairs on Saturday, was thus denied a record sixth Olympic rowing title and remains tied with compatriot Elisabeta Lipa and Steve Redgrave on five gold.
