Six-time Australian Olympian James Tomkins has confirmed he has rowed his last competitive Olympic race.

The Australian men's eight finished a disappointing last in the final, which was won by Canada.

Greeting his family after the loss, Tomkins was in tears.

The 42-year-old says his sixth Olympics will be his last but it is not the way he wanted to go out.

The Australian women's eight also finished last, as did the women's quadruple sculls, while the men's quadruple sculls came in fourth.
