10 killed in Egyptian minibus accident

Posted August 18, 2008 08:05:00

A minibus rammed into the back of a truck carrying steel bars north of Cairo yesterday, killing 10 people including a three-year-old boy.

The state-run Middle East News Agency (MENA) said 11 people were injured in the crash.

All the injured were in critical condition and have been moved to hospitals in the Delta town of Benha, where the accident occurred, MENA said.

Police said the minibus driver was driving at high speed and lost control of the vehicle, which veered and slammed into the truck.

Reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions have lead to a high accident toll in Egypt.

A series of crashes in recent years caused a public outcry over the government's record of road and transport safety.

A new traffic code with tougher punishments for lawbreakers came into effect at the start of August.
