Manly captain Matt Orford says the 40-32 loss to South Sydney yesterday may have cost the Sea Eagles the minor premiership.

The match was the first time in three years that a team has scored 40 points against the Sea Eagles' defence.

Orford classed the defeat as the worst result in his three years at the club and said his side had been unprepared for the game.

"Attitude, that was it," he said.

"It is plain and simple, attitude plays a big part in this game. You have got to turn up each week."

South Sydney coach Jason Taylor says 2009 is looking positive for his club.

"If we can do it week in, week out, and compete with a team like Manly the way we did today, it is really exciting for the club."
