Calls for Monaro Hwy safety review

Posted August 18, 2008 11:00:00

Business operators are calling for an urgent review of safety standards on the Monaro's main traffic link.

Cooma Unlimited chairman Dugald Mitchell has been invited to take part in an NRMA road safety forum in Canberra today.

The talks come after two fatalities on regional roads in as many weeks.

Mr Mitchell says the Monaro Highway between Canberra and Cooma is bearing the full brunt of traffic travelling to and from the Snowy Mountains ski fields and the developing areas of Jindabyne.

"One should remember that there is no air service into the snowfields now, everybody has to come via car," he said.

"Twenty years ago there was also a rail into Cooma. That's no longer there, which means the road itself is the sole means of getting in and out of Monaro and the ski fields."
