New drought support scheme for grape growers

Bank lenders and business advisers will be part of a new program of drought counselling for grape growers.

Samantha Hellams from the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation says growers are facing one of the toughest seasons yet.

She says the program aims to fill the gaps in existing drought support by using people growers are comfortable with, to speak to them about their options.

"If someone that they speak to and they trust to help them with their vineyard can hand them a piece of paper and say, 'you know what, I reckon you could ring this person here, he might be able to give you some help with your water allocations and whether you can afford to buy it', if they accept the information from someone they trust then we might have some hope of helping those who really need it," she said.
