Ombudsman probes Bundaberg horticulture industry

Posted August 19, 2008 07:22:00

The Federal Workplace Ombudsman is following up on a number of issues in the Bundaberg region, in south-east Queensland, that were identified in checks of the fruit and vegetable industry last week.

The Ombudsman says a number of hostels that supply labour to nearby farms were checked in the operation that was timed to coincide with the start of the picking season.

A spokesman for the Ombudsman says some issues were identified and they are being looked into.

The nature of the problems have not been identified.

Follow-up visits to the farms will also be held next month where inspectors will speak to property owners and their employees.
