Orange hospital cost may be $20m more

Posted August 19, 2008 08:49:00

There are predictions Orange's new base hospital could cost $20 million more than original estimates.

Revised plans for the new $214 million facility have been submitted to the Orange council for consideration.

A member of the medical staff council, Dr John Lambert, says the total floor space is now about 16 per cent bigger.

He says there are 10 more in-patient overnight beds, a larger space for the intensive care unit and extra beds for heart patients.

"The cardiovascular unit has gone from a 12 bed unit to a 22 bed unit. It comprises 16 beds which are ... what in the old days would have been called a coronary care unit and then there's another six beds which are medical beds," he said.

"The Government doesn't have extra money to put to this sort of project. What we'll be doing is basically putting back some other project that the was in the queue due to the extra cost of this project, so it's a sobering thought."
