More financial aid urged for regional uni students

Posted August 19, 2008 10:00:00

The Youth Affairs Council says young people in regional Victoria need more financial help to go to university.

A study of 900 regional school leavers has found they are two-and-a-half times more likely to defer tertiary study than Melbourne-based students.

The study found many young people could not afford to live away from home straight away, but many took up study the next year.

The youth council's chief executive officer, Georgie Ferrari, says young people in regional areas need more help.

"The thing that's important now about this is how the Government and universities can respond to this issue and one of the things we've been saying for a long time is that the living away from home allowance and support for students from rural and regional areas needs to be looked at separate to metropolitan students, so this'll be something that we'll be pushing."
