Community needs more funds for Saturday GP

Posted August 19, 2008 10:30:00

A Hunter Valley community says it has a doctor ready to start practising on Saturdays, but not enough funding to make it happen.

A doctor has expressed interest in working the weekend shift at the East Gresford surgery.

That has prompted the Hunter Rural Division of General Practice to ask Dungog council for $7,000 to fund start-up costs.

The organisation's chief executive officer, Alison Crocker, says the community has raised $5,000 but more money is needed.

"We've got a GP that would be interested in coming and we're trying to make it as attractive as possible to help that GP come," she said.

"We've approached private enterprise as well, so we're looking at all our potential funding sources to try and get this GP to Gresford."
