RTA depot reopened after tanker fire

Posted August 19, 2008 12:43:00

An RTA depot has been reopened after a bitumen tanker caught fire at Narrandera, in the New South Wales Riverina, this morning.

The fire broke out about 8:30am (AEST) in a tank holding 5,000 litres of bitumen.

About 30 people were moved outside of a 50 metre exclusion zone as a precaution.

A NSW Fire Brigades spokesman says the decided not to put water on the fire after consultation with RTA staff.

Instead, the air outlet to the bitumen tank was resealed and the fire went out.

The all clear was given by 10:30am (AEDT).

Meanwhile, the Sturt Highway has been reopened at Wagga Wagga after the death of a 46-year-old man in a crash between a four-wheel drive and a small truck this morning.

Both incidents are being investigated.
