Bendigo community radio faces shake-up

Posted August 19, 2008 14:07:00

There is expected to be a shake-up of existing community radio services in Bendigo as part of changes to services in the city.

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has been unable to identify any unused frequencies that could carry the ABC's NewsRadio service.

It is proposing to allocate the frequency 89.5 for NewsRadio, which is being temporarily shared by two community broadcasters.

ACMA spokesman Tony George says it is considering one permanent community licence for Bendigo.

"If NewsRadio is allocated 89.5 megahertz, the existing temporary broadcasters would time share 101.5 megahertz and that would be the frequency that could be allocated for the long-term community broadcaster in Bendigo," he said.

The authority is seeking written public submissions on the proposals.
