ACT to cut eco-friendly car tax

Posted August 19, 2008 16:07:00

Laws are expected to pass in the ACT Assembly later today to give a tax break to people who buy environmentally friendly cars.

Under the laws, certain cars will be about $1,000 cheaper after a reduction in stamp duty.

Some bigger, less efficient cars will become more expensive.

Chief Minister Jon Stanhope says it is the first initiative of its kind in the country.

"The most efficient cars in terms of emissions will actualy receive a significant reduction in stamp duty," he said.

"For a Prius for example, a $35,000 car or thereabouts, the reduction in stamp duty will be over $1,000. So this is a major inducement encouragement for residents of citizens to buy a fuel efficient car."
