Suspended sentence for sex offence

Posted August 19, 2008 19:31:00

A Burnie womans has been given a suspended sentence for having sex with a teenage boy who fathered her child.

The 25-year-old woman pleaded guilty in the Burnie Criminal Court this morning, to having a sexual relationship with a young person.

The woman and the boy, neither of whom can be named, met at a party when she was 24 and he was 16.

He had just been released from the Ashley Youth Detention Centre, but the woman said he had tattoos and looked at least 17.

They had a sexual relationship for six months, while he was still underage, and the woman's just given birth to their child, prompting Family Services to report the relationship.

The two are now engaged, although the teenager, who's now 17, is back on remand in Ashley.

Justice Shan Tennant gave the woman a three month suspended sentence, with a three year good behaviour bond.

She will not be put on the Sex Offenders Register.
