Heavy monsoon rains in northern India have killed at least 87 people.

Indian authorities say 73 people died when their houses collapsed in heavy rain in India's northern state of Uttar Pradesh in the past 48 hours.

At least another 14 people have drowned in floodwaters in the state of Punjab and more than 125 villages are underwater.

Thousands of people are homeless and stranded.

India's transport ministry says rescue efforts have been hindered by flooded roads and railways across the country's north.

More heavy rain is expected in the next 24 hours.
