MPs back drought aid decision

Posted August 20, 2008 11:25:00

Local MPs Kay Hull and Sussan Ley have welcomed a Federal Government move to extend Exceptional Circumstances (EC) drought aid until the end of March.

EC had been due to expire in less than six weeks.

The extension applies to 32 drought declared districts including Young, Yass, Gundagai, Hay, Hume, Riverina, and the South-West Slopes and Plains.

Ms Hull says it is a much needed boost for producers, irrigators and small businesses.

"We've had some rain but it hasn't been widespread. It's not certain that we'll get crops again this year," she said.

"It's certainly going to be peace of mind for those producers who have been concerned about whether or not they're going to make income gains for the next financial year."
