Conservation council disputes Paradise Dam levels

Posted August 20, 2008 11:33:00

The Wide Bay Burnett Conservation Council says it has figures that prove the Paradise Dam has not reached official operating levels for the downstream fishway as claimed by the Water Minister earlier this month.

The council's vice-president, Roger Currie, says the levels fall just short of the 62 metre elevation mark and that water has not been released from August 8.

Mr Currie says that is probably because a noxious weed is growing in the area.

"We've got visual photo evidence that the fish passage is probably blocked with salvinia for its down stream passage," he said.

"Should they be using the upstream fish lift system they have a danger of using that fish lift system and attracting salvinia."
