The Australian men's hockey team has suffered a big blow to its gold medal chances, with striker Grant Schubert ruled out of the rest of the Olympics with a knee injury.

The Kookaburras striker suffered the injury in last night's 3-3 draw against Great Britain.

His mother Glanys Schubert says he will have MRI scans on his knee today and it is expected he will have to rest for at least eight weeks.

"He just took a brilliant dive and put the ball into the half-circle and I think it was Eddie Ockenden put it in the goal, and through taking the dive he must have landed on his knee and through the impact damaged the ligament behind the knee," she said.

The Kookaburras play Spain in tomorrow's semi-final.
