Investigation launched into Thredbo River diesel spill

Posted August 20, 2008 12:06:00

An investigation is underway into a pollution spill in a sensitive Snowy Mountains waterway.

The New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service has confirmed that diesel fuel leaked into the Thredbo River near the resort village last Saturday.

The park service's Andrew Logan says there was an immediate response by the Thredbo Village owners, NSW Fire Brigade and national parks.

Mr Logan says authorities are trying to determine what happened.

"It was a very quick response with the fire brigade putting out booms in the river and containing it as much as possible," he said.

"Obviously we are very concerned about any impact on the Thredbo River being a sensitive alpine stream, so part of the investigation will be looking into that.

"The investigation will be in [the] order of months. Any sort of environmental issue is particularly complicated, so we need to make sure it's a very thorough investigation."
