Numberplate scanning 'saves time, money'

Posted August 20, 2008 12:45:00

The New South Wales Government says high-tech numberplate scanning technology is boosting police efforts in tracking down stolen and unregistered vehicles.

The infra-red technology was introduced last year in a bid to catch more car thieves.

Figures show more than 460 theft and driving charges have been filed over the past 12 months, with close to 4,000 unregistered vehicles detected.

Police Minister David Campbell says the technology saves officers' time and taxpayers' money.

He says the technology is helping police identify stolen vehicles in the blink of an eye.

"The technology scans a numberplate as the vehicle drives along the road and checks that numberplate against a range of databases in point-two of one second, so it's very fast and very accurate," he said.
