Health service backs abortion bill

Posted August 20, 2008 13:42:00

A north-east Victorian women's health service has welcomed moves to decriminalise abortion.

The State Government introduced a bill to Parliament yesterday to allow unrestricted abortions in the first 24 weeks of pregnancy.

A termination would have to be approved by two doctors after 24 weeks.

Susie Reid from Women's Health Goulburn North-East says it would bring the law into the 21st century.

"The Government has listened to the majority of Victorians and has followed the Victorian Law Reform Commission recommendations," she said.

"So now we're calling on parliamentarians to all show leadership and I think the call now is do it well, do it once and reflect community attitude."
