Blocking Goulburn's pipeline 'disastrous'

The Mayor of Goulburn, Paul Stephenson, says three councillors are 'messing around' with the future of the area by stalling the development of a water pipeline.

The council last month committed to project management for the $49 million project.

Councillors last night defeated a recision motion from three former mayors calling for that decision to be overturned.

The three then submitted another motion, stopping the council dealing with five expressions of interest to manage the project.

Councillor Stephenson says the area is back in drought and heading towards disaster.

"Not only disappointed, disgusted with three of them," he said.

"We've had Goulburn that's nearly run out of water three times in recent history, we've got an an offer on the table for $40 million from the state and federal government and one of those councillors got up last night, and said 'Look, we've got four years of water left. What's the rush?'."
